To those interested in wind or solar energy, we would like to share our experience working with Freewind.

I had studied wind and solar energy for months and had decided on using wind  energy. Freewind advised against wind due to our location and recommended solar energy. Freewind also suggested that we contact Alliant Energy to do an energy audit.

This is where things really started to come into focus. The energy audit showed where the sun would rise and set every month of the year on the building that we were going to install the solar panels. We had no obstructions from

other buildings or trees in this area so it was a perfect fit.

Freewind was outstanding to work with. We wanted to be hands on and do as much of the work as possible ourselves. Freewind was more than willing to work with us on this and even sent one of their employees out to train us on how to

measure and install the rails for the solar panels.

The system was completely installed and turned on in June of 2013 and we combined 2 electric meters into one and do not have an electric bill. Due to excess electricity produced over our normal usage, we bought an electric car (Nissan Leaf) and still do not have an electric bill. My wife Debbie uses it to commute back and forth to work, church, and shopping all over town. This car is awesome. Until you drive one, you won't believe it. Instead of going to a gas station, she is able to refuel by plugging it in to a charger in our garage.

Part of the project was having an energy production meter installed and an internet connection to it. We are able to see each panel and its performance every hour of every day. If ice, snow, dirt or anything is on a panel, we can identify which ones and clean them off. I am like a kid in a candy store watching the daily production on our grid!

Freewind was meticulous with timing on paperwork, ie permits, energy rebates through Alliant Energy, the state of Iowa and the Federal Government. We would like to thank Freewind for all their patience, recommendations and diligence on

the paperwork for the rebates, and a project that may pay for itself in three short years.

Freewind installed a Skystream turbine at Tom’s home in 2010. We installed a solar system to complement his turbine in late 2012. The combined wind and solar system will eliminate 90% of his

utility expense.
